Mikumi National Park
About Mikumi National Park
The gateway to southern Tanzania, where lions and elephants roam the floodplain.
Mikumi National Park sits at the heart of southern Tanzania’s safari circuit easy to reach, yet rich in wildlife and wide-open scenery.
Just outside Morogoro and bordering Nyerere National Park, Mikumi is known for its broad Mkata Floodplain, where animals gather in clear view. The landscape feels open and expansive, often compared to a compact version of Serengeti National Park.
Wildlife is abundant and easy to spot. Herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo roam the plains, while giraffes move gracefully between acacia trees. Lions are regularly seen, and hippos dominate the park’s waterholes. Birdlife is also impressive, with a wide range of species across the wetlands and savannah.
One of Mikumi’s strengths is its accessibility connected by road from Dar es Salaam, making it ideal for short safaris or weekend escapes. The experience is less crowded than northern parks, giving it a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
Mikumi may not be the largest park, but it delivers a well-balanced safari: open views, reliable wildlife sightings, and a calm, unhurried pace that makes it easy to enjoy Tanzania’s natural beauty.
