About Udzungwa Mountains National Park
A biodiversity hotspot with spectacular waterfalls and endemic primates.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique natural treasures a place of tropical forests, dramatic waterfalls, and extraordinary biodiversity. Unlike traditional safari parks, Udzungwa is best explored on foot, offering an adventurous and immersive experience in the heart of nature.
Part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains, the park is often called the “Galápagos of Africa” because of its remarkable concentration of endemic plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth.
Dense rainforest covers the mountains, creating a cool and misty atmosphere filled with birdsong, butterflies, and the sounds of hidden wildlife. Hiking trails lead through towering trees, hanging vines, and crystal-clear streams toward breathtaking waterfalls such as the famous Sanje Falls, which plunge dramatically into the forest below.
Udzungwa is especially known for its rare primates. Visitors may encounter the endangered Iringa red colobus monkey and the Sanje mangabey species unique to these forests. The park is also home to elephants, leopards, bushbucks, and hundreds of colorful bird species.
The landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from tropical rainforest to montane forest and open grasslands at higher elevations. Every trail reveals new scenery, making the park a dream destination for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.
